American Friends of Yachdav is a registered 501c3 nonprofit with the IRS, EIN 56-2441110 and has been assisting those in need and less fortunate for the past 10 years. Legal battles with the government left them with no permanent place to live. After years of legal battles, many families received land in various parts of the country, however, many of these families were farmers who supplied a major portion of produce to Israel. Left without a way of earning a living their funds dried up. Rabbi Binyamin Gottlieb and Rabbbi Shlomo Yarimi took it upon themselves to help. With many fundraising trips they did their best to sustain families in need
Throughout the past 11 years, Rabbi Gottlieb has been assisting families who were evicted from Gush Katif in many ways. As of 2016 there are still more than 370 families with permanent housing, living in caravans old and decrepit but doing their best. Every day of the week hot meals are delivered to more than 200 families in addition to the weekly food packages.
For all of these years they have devoted their time and effort to care for these families, who as of 2016 375 families are still without a permanent place to live.
When the Gush Katif saga occurred, New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind and his wife Shani, lifetime supporters of Israel, took the entire episode very hard. He made many trips to Israel bringing many hundreds of people to see for themselves what Gush Katif was and how it was built from wasteland to a flourishing agricultural area with the toil and labor over a 30 year period.. Dov Hikind did not forget the 1,800 families evicted. After meeting Rabbi Gottlieb and having spent many trips with him in Gush Katif he made it his mission to assist in raising funds for those left without and until this day continues to do so. He did and does it with no fanfare or promotion for himself. This Gala is a fundraising event for the work of Yachdav, however, equally important is honoring Dov and Shani Hikind for their selfless dedication for more than a decade to those who are still suffering.
PLEASE RSVP BY JUNE 23 AT dinner2016@yachdav.net
NOTE: Thank you to the owners of The venue of the evening, The Elite Palace is not enough to express our gratitude to them for sponsoring this event at no cost to Yachdav. They have donated the evening including hall and catering to honor Dov and Shani Hikind and to help Yachdav raise funds for people in dire need of assistance. This means that 100% of your donation goes to help the less fortunate and not to pay for a 5 star Gala event.
Growth:
Due to one family from Gush Katif having to deal with a child with cancer and assisting them, Yachdav became involved with helping children and their families with suffering with cancer. While there are many cancer support organizations, Yachdav realized that there was a gap in a critical service. Consulting with the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund in New York, we realized that we were correct in what we were seeing. Who is there to support the family of the sick child? Who is there to support and counsel the healthy siblings who become all but forgotten? Who is there when parents must leave work to care for a sick child and they do not have enough income to support their families, pay utility bills, mortgages, food and clothing.
Yachdav has raised more than $250,000 over the past 2 years for medical, financial, and medication assistance for families in need. This not limited to any one area. We are contacted constantly for assistance from people all over Israel and even abroad. We have run very successful online campaign for specific cases, however, due to limited funding, for every one family we are able to help, there are at least ten that we cannot.
Yachdav expanded to help families in need as well as the child who is ill. Our motto, “To Care for the Forgotten” is exactly that.
Recently, Yachdav entered into a cooperation agreement with the nonprofit Brotherhood of the World run by 2 basketball stars. Al Farouq and Aladay Aminu. Al Farouq plays n the NBA for the Portland Trail Blazers and Aladay plays in the Israel Basketball League for Eilat. While the Aminu brothers have been helping inner city youth, Aladay’s experience in Israel and his love for the country was an incentive to collaborate with Yachdav. We will be doing joint campaigns to help children and families in need in the USA, Israel, and the Aminu family’s native country of Nigeria. These projects are in the planning stage now and will begin shortly. Both brothers will be playing in the Olympics in Brazil for the Nigeria national team.
Sderot and Southern Israel:
Having gone through the saga of Gush Katif, Yachdav expanded to one more area. The city of Sderot and the Gaza border. Working and supporting the Merkaz Hachesed of Sderot, Yachdav has been able to help the residents of Sderot. Because of the constant tension on the southern border, kassam rockets falling on a steady basis, many businesses left. There is a shortage of jobs and the young are leaving the area. Many elderly are left without basic needs. We have delivered refrigerators, tables, chairs, clothing, medication, wheelchairs, walkers and other basic needs to people who have all but been forgotten. 750 Food packages are delivered each and every week to families who would otherwise go hungry.
Even if you cannot attend the event, you can honor Dov and Shani Hikind by donating to Yachdav in their honor so that we can continue to help those in desperate need of assistance.
