The Bilu Synagogue Complex
The Synagogue is one of the oldest in Tel Aviv and was established during the British Mandate. In part,
due to the renowned cantor, Ravitz, and the events that took place there. The Synagogue complex
holds nostalgic significance to thousands of residents but its historical significance is even greater: the
Synagogue was built by a congregation of pioneers of the City and is one of my most significant
elements of the cultural development and activities.
The Synagogue is located on Rothschild Boulevard, in the White City area recognized by UNESCO as a
World Heritage Site. Rothschild Boulevard is significant in the urban development of the City and
includes the HaBima Theater from the Northern Point, until the Independence Museum where David
Ben Gurion declared the State of Israel, leading to the Neve Tzedek neighborhood.
Today, the Boulevard is a cultural epicenter and is an integral part of the Israeli economy and is a top
destination in Tel Aviv. The declaration of the State in 1948 and the Israeli social protest tents in 2011
that took place on the Rothschild Boulevard demonstrate its history and modern significance. Today,
Rothschild Boulevard is a preferred location for many directors, artists looking to use its streets to
exhibit their work and perform. At times, there are social and political events that take place.
THE NEED
The Synagogue has not been renovated since its establishment over 80 years ago, and the furnishings
of the synagogue have not been changed from over 40 years. Due to the intensive use of the
synagogue, it is in need of significant rejuvenation in order to restore the Synagogue to its original
splendor. There is a unique opportunity to rejuvenate this special sanctuary and to transform it into a
center of Jewish life in the heart of the Boulevard.
