This is my Bar Mitzvah Project.
I chose it because when I was 7 and a half, we found out that I had epilepsy. One of the things my family did to help me cope was to get me a dog. Having my dog, Sasha, to cuddle and take care of has helped me a lot.
Some people with epilepsy have a dog that is specially trained to help them if they have a seizure. These dogs can be trained to protect the person’s head, get an adult, help the person stand up or dial 911 on a special phone. Some dogs can even warn the person that they are about to have a seizure.
Seizure dogs can cost up to $40,000 to raise and train. Different organization require families to pay for a part or all of this cost.
For my bar mitzvah project, I decided to raise money to help a child purchase a seizure dog. You are all invited to join me so I can reach my goal of $2,000. I am partnering with the Northern California Epilepsy Foundation. They will handle the money and help me vet the recipient(s).
