The Challenge
How can we help the impoverished people of Sderot—the city most affected by Hamas’s constant terror—feel like a cared for part of the Jewish community?
The Situation
This Passover, the neediest residents of Sderot, a city just 1 kilometer from the Gaza border, are having a hard time seeing the promise of the Promised Land. As the closest city to Gaza, they are a constant target, living in fear of rockets and mortars, running to shelters every time the sirens sound, at all hours of the day and night. The IDF and Israeli government work hard to protect them, but they can only do so much. Many residents (and 40% of the children!) of Sderot suffer from anxiety and PTSD. Many victims of the constant terror are unable to return to work, affecting their livelihoods and local businesses at the same time.
When it comes to the High Holy Days, many are left without even the basic things they need to properly celebrate, or families to celebrate with.
We’re changing that with hundreds of civilian and IDF volunteers…and you.
The Impact
Our Answer
With your help, we will bring the joy of Pesach—the celebration of history and victory over oppression—and the feeling of care from the greater Jewish community to these people on the frontlines of Israel’s fight for existence.
Merkaz Hachesed Sderot has rallied volunteers from around the country to prepare Passover Care Packages for the neediest in Sderot. Volunteers from around the country and IDF soldiers volunteer for 3 weeks prior to sort, arrange, package and deliver the packages to the needy.
Depending on the needs of each particular family, packages will include: Poultry, meat, eggs, matzah, wine, an array of fruits and vegetables, canned goods, diapers, baby food, household cleaning supplies, vouchers to local clothing stores (to help residents and local businesses), and more.
These packages will cost a total $125,000 (₪500,000 ILS) to reach all of the people who need our help. If we can raise $75,000, a generous donor has agreed to give us another $50,000!
Whether we reach our full goal or not, every penny contributed will go to help the neediest in Sderot.
Our Team/Organization
Merkaz Hachesed Sderot, founded and run by Avichay Amusi, works tirelessly year-round to help all those in need in Sderot. Whether delivering weekly food packages to more than 1,000 people, arranging counselors for trauma victims and teens at risk, or providing support for the local branch of Yad Sarah, providing wheel chairs, walkers and other necessities for the elderly, Avichay has devoted his entire life to help the people of Sderot and surrounding areas. Without Merkaz Hachesed Sderot many elderly and vulnerable would be without any assistance.
