The Jewish Innovation
Washington Heights is where we call home. We know the aisles of Keyfood, the characters of the A train, and the friendly faces we say shabbat shalom to in shul. But do we know our neighbors? Sam and I recently learned about the large number of impoverished elderly community members we have living on Bennett Ave and the surrounding area. We want to help them! We need to help them!
While many of us are fortunate to spend Pesach with family and have delicious warm meals, these community members can’t. On Pesach night, leiyl Haseder, they are alone, as it’s too hard for them to leave their homes or have no where to go. We want to make sure they are comfortable at home!
They do receive packages of non-perishable kosher for Passover foods from the JCC, which is greatly appreciated, but nothing fresh and prepared that is easy for them to just reheat and eat.
The Impact
Last year there weren’t enough funds collected to ensure that people could have prepared food delivered to their home. We don’t want to see that happen again this year! As the haggadah says, “Kol Dichpin Yeitzei ViYeichiol”, everyone should be welcomed in to our table on Pesach night. So while we can’t bring all of our neighbors to our parents house, let us join together to make sure they are safe and well fed in their own home.
What Will You Do with the Money?
Our goal is to raise $1800 to provide food for at least 35 community members that the JCC of Washington Heights-Inwood have determined are in need. All of the money will go directly to purchasing the food!
We already got the bags donated to carry the food in!
