The Jerusalem Lone Soldier Project
Many years ago the Masorti Movement began a project with a group of lone soldiers living in Jerusalem from the Ukraine, we could never have thought that we would continue taking care of these young men and women serving in our IDF with us as their main support. Today other IDF immigrant soldiers have joined us and throughout there is an awareness of their needs and caring. They know that Moreshet Israel Yerushalaim and our Masorti Movement and friends here and abroad will welcome them and endeavor to assist them in times of need and in times of celebrating the Jewish Holidays. Today in January 2017 we are responsible for the organization and fund raising for 260 “lone and needy” men and women soldiers serving in our IDF with us as there main support. We have over sixty soldiers who have chosen to commit and shoulder the national defense burden whose Jerusalem families are no longer in contact with them and no longer recognize or have any personal contact with their children. We became aware of the situation just in the past two years’ and the numbers of the number of these young soldiers in our care from such families is increasing daily. We were privileged in the past two years to care for two sets of brothers (who are still in contact with us) who had chosen to leave their ultra orthodox families and serve in the IDF.
During the holidays we organize regular get together festival for the lone soldiers in our care. We celebrate with lots of the young soldiers, men and women chatting and talking to each other and make them feel at home, something they yearn for during there service.
We provide these wonderful young men and women presents in these occasions during the holidays, consisting of Super-sol Sheli coupons, which they can shop with freely for groceries, fabulous English cake bakery freshly baked kosher cakes, and lots of goodies drinks, and home basics such as new blankets, sheets, and occasionally home basic appliances.
Some soldiers who are unable to attend the festivities are still taken care of, as we approach each and every one of the personally and make sure they are taken care of and maintain a worm personal contact with each and every one of them.
For fifteen years with the support of Moreshet Israel and the Masorti movement here and abroad we have been able to continue functioning and caring for our lone soldiers.
Thanks to each and every one of the generous Jewish people whom we hope that with their financial donation and moral support We will be able to continue our project which is helping and supporting a growing number of lone soldiers every year.
