Hamilton is a small Jewish community west of Toronto. We have the highest Per capita rate of poverty in Canada. Our food bank services 45 families a month during the year. At Yom Tov the number doubles. We provide dry goods, gift cards to local supermarkets and kosher butcher. We currently have a Chicken of the Month Club where donors pledge $25 a month to buy kosher chickens and ground beef to be given out for Shabbos every week. Funding for the food bank comes from community donations and a grant from Mazon Canada. Our clients are immigrants, individuals who have lost jobs, live on disability pensions all below the poverty line.
