The Jewish Innovation

Googled “volunteering in Israel” recently? Feeling frustrated by the limited options for those over age 30? Skilled Volunteers for Israel (SVFI) is an innovative, professionally operated, nonprofit organization that develops skill-based volunteer placements for active North American adults and retirees in Israeli nonprofit, educational and cultural institutions. We have a unique individualized placement process and have served more than 120 individuals with meaningful volunteer placements in over 50 Israeli organizations.

In addition to individual volunteering services, SVFI is launching a group program that will use our unique placement process for volunteers who come to Israel together. Our new program will serve individuals who want to come to Israel with others also interested in volunteering and contributing to Israel. This program will offer a 3 week immersive experience – based on 50+ hours of volunteering with lectures and outings that integrate and engage volunteers in Israeli society – seeing and doing things that tourists miss!

Join our campaign to help us get the word out about Skilled Volunteers for Israel in general and in particular, help us promote and recruit up to 20 volunteers for the group program.

The Impact

Skilled Volunteers for Israel has four BIG reasons why our work is good for the Jewish people:
1) Skilled volunteering strengthens the connections between Diaspora and Israeli Jews to the mutual benefit of both.
2) Actively engages Jewish mature adults and active retirees in Jewish service
3) Productively deploys the skills and expertise of volunteers to augment and strengthen Israeli organizations working on critical social issues and social justice in Israel;
4) Deepens North American Jews’ understanding of Israel and Israeli society by living and working with Israelis.

Our volunteers have made real contributions to Israel by sharing their skills, expertise, hearts and minds. Many have returned to volunteer again and share their experiences in their synagogues and communities. The news about Israel is so often negative. Volunteering in inspiring organizations doing important grassroots work to improve the lives of Israelis is a powerful way of learning about and promoting positive stories about Israel.

What Will You Do with the Money?

Skilled Volunteers for Israel runs on a very limited budget. We have less than 2 FTE staff members running our organization and one of the two (our founder and executive director) works pro-bono. We’ve established a great reputation among Israeli organizations for how valuable and prepared our volunteers are and how beneficial they find our volunteers and the process we use in placement.

With our plans to launch a group program in 2016, we are seeking funds to help us recruit up to 20 volunteers for the group program. We understand that recruitment for groups is different than what we have done to encourage individuals to apply. This campaign will give us the funds and the boost to do some targeted promotion to successfully recruit volunteers for our exciting new program.
