2015 Kochmann

The Max and Hilde Kochmann Summer School for PhD Students in European Jewish History and Culture is unique in Europe, offering research students, some of whom work in universities with no Jewish studies programs, the opportunity to present their research in an academic setting that provides in-depth feedback from scholars. It provides support and guidance to students with an interest in Jewish studies and helps to create a network of Jewish scholars in Europe. The Summer School is structured as a four-day event, which includes project presentations by PhD candidates and individual consultation with the senior academics running the program. Students from fifteen different countries have participated in the Summer School to date.

We are seeking funding of £15,000 every other year to enable us to continue to hold this important event.

Centre for German Jewish Studies University of Sussex

For over 20 years, the Centre for German-Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex has honoured and recorded the cultural legacy of German Jewry from the early modern period to the present day. During this time, unwavering support from members of the German-Jewish community has enabled the Centre to develop and thrive. With this support, the Centre has built up an impressive research reputation and has had success receiving competitive research funding. Most recently, we engaged in a project digitising important historical documents, something that bears testament to the significant archive we hold and our expertise in understanding these materials. An objective of the Centre has always been to research the history of Jewish refugees and their families to the United Kingdom during and after the Second World War. In cooperation with other international institutions the Centre has sought to analyse this history within a broader research perspective that includes the emigration of German-speaking Jews to other countries and an appreciation of the German-Jewish legacy worldwide. Alongside this specific focus, the Centre is one of the few research institutions in the world devoted to the interdisciplinary study of the history and culture of Jews in Germanspeaking Lands since the Enlightenment. The establishment in 2013 of a professorship in Modern Israel Studies, supported by a group of leading UK Jewish philanthropists, has further enabled the Centre to broaden its perspective by strengthening by strengthening research on contemporary issues. For further information, please contactDiana Franklin, Centre Manager,Centre for German-Jewish StudiesArts BUniversity of SussexBrightonEast Sussex BN1 9QNT: +44 (0) 1273 678771T: +44 (0) 208 455 4785 (London Office)E: d.franklin@sussex.ac.ukwww.sussex.ac.uk/cgjs
