The Jewish Innovation

Music has incredible transcendental qualities: it can connect people across borders created by age, race, gender, culture, nationalities, language, and time.

YACHAD (Hebrew for “unity” and pronounced YAH-had) is is an international choral community using music’s power to connect choirs from all over the world. In addition to a virtual choral festival, Yachad will host an International Choral Exchange Program in Krakow, Poland in Summer 2015.

This program, in partnership with the Jewish Community Center and Jewish Culture Festival, both in Krakow, Poland, will bring students from the United States, Poland, and Israel together for the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow. Not only will students and educators learn about Jewish life beyond Auschwitz through in Jewish music and culture workshops, but they will teach each other about their respective country’s languages and cultures and will engage in international and multicultural dialogue.

Finally, they will have the opportunity to perform as a combined choir at 25th Annual Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow alongside 30,000 musicians, artists, participants, and scholars from around the world. With your help, we can foster international and multicultural dialogue through music to encourage peace and mutual understanding across global boarders.

The Impact

Many visitors who come to Krakow visit Auschwitz and associate the Jewish community here with genocide and death, but Yachad emphasizes the LIFE that is in the Krakow’s Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Culture Festival, in Krakow. Yachad will serve Jewish and non-Jewish students alike, both of whom will have the opportunity to fully experience the richness of the Jewish Culture through singing, dancing, food, and multicultural dialogue.

Those who are Jewish will have an opportunity to delve into their vibrant culture, as well as learn about other cultures by student-led workshops in the exchange program. Those who are not Jewish will have an opportunity to learn about and experience Jewish culture as well as teach others about their own.

Yachad is a celebration of all cultures and peoples, and will facilitate further multicultural dialogue and collaboration, and perspectives gained will also benefit their families, friends, and educational systems back home.

Yachad will give the opportunity for stereotypes and misunderstandings to be abolished through multicultural experience, and for life-long friendships to be formed between the participating students.

What Will You Do with the Money?

Your contributions will go directly towards scholarships that will be distributed to students on a needs-based basis to help cover the cost of travel and program fees.

$2,000 will cover travel & program for one student from USA
$900 will cover travel & program for one student from Israel
$500 will cover travel & program for one student from Poland
$300 will cover accommodation for one student
$200 will cover workshop/concert fees for one student
$30 will cover one day of meals for one student
$5 will cover one workshop fee/concert ticket for one student

Yachad is grateful for ANY amount you are able to give. Together, we can make Yachad possible for students who would not otherwise be able to afford it.

Sonja Larson, Fulbright Scholar

I am a Fulbright Scholar from the United States researching the role of music in the Jewish community in Krakow, Poland. I have a degree in vocal performance from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and spent two months last summer in Poland researching Music in the Holocaust. I have presented my research at international conferences as well as several in the United States, and now wish to bring young people from all over the world together through the creation of the Yachad International Choral Community, and its Virtual Choral Festival and Choral Exchange Program in Krakow, Poland.
