The Jewish Innovation

Meet HasBARa. We are a group of students, studying at IDC Herzlia, currently acting as fellows in StandWithUs’ prestigious fellowship for leadership and public diplomacy.

Drawing on our life experiences we have set out to create awareness among young Israeli backpackers as to the difficult situations they may find themselves faced with while travelling abroad and to provide them with valuable tools and information with which to handle such situations.

So, where does the “bar” part come in (vis-a-vis the name: hasBARa)?
Perhaps our biggest challenge will be getting our target audience (young Israelis, fresh out of their military service) to actually listen to us. Hence, our method of attraction is quite simple: we are running four major events in popular bars in four cities across the country (Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva), offering FREE BEER in addition to two sets of lectures. One, given by a returning traveler, depicting some of the scenarios which may arise whilst traveling abroad, and the second, given by a member of our team, providing practical advocacy tools for travelers.

The Impact

Israel is the only home for the Jewish people and we mirror each other in the way we are perceived by the world – a hatred for Israel is a hatred of the Jews and vice-versa. And so, it is important for Jews everywhere that Israel be viewed in a positive light. Israel has, of course, a foreign ministry with formal ambassadors in almost every country in the world. However, each Israeli traveling abroad, whether realizing it or not, acts as an “unofficial” ambassador of Israel, making an impression, whether positive or negative, every step of his journey, an impression which reflects on Jews everywhere.

What Will You Do with the Money?

The money will go towards three main avenues:
a) getting in touch with our audience (young Israeli backpackers). This will involve setting up booths at Universities and army-release conventions, printing posters, fliers and pamphlets.
b) giving over our message: running our main events, paying for refreshments and gift-tokens, venues, lecturers etc.
c) staying in touch and providing follow-up info.
