Salaimenda is a small village in Hingna Taluka in Nagpur District of Maharashtra state. It comes under Salaimenda Panchayat. The total population of this village is around 546 and number of houses are 84. Female population is around 46.5%.
The major issues found there is no availability of drinking water and no facility of toilets.
The women of the houses have to go very far to bring water for their families to drink and use for their daily chores.
Also there is no toilet in the village. They go in forest area for toilet which is not safe for women as well as children. This is very unhygienic and will lead to serious problems. The elders of the village requested us to solve their problems of drinking water and sanitation.
Issue, problem & challenge:
No drinking water facility:
Rural villagers have insufficient access to purified drinking water due to impacts of low income, technical solutions and water contamination from agricultural chemicals, waste disposal etc. Villagers cannot develop sustainability of their drinking water. Due to lack of clean water, people are suffering from water borne diseases.
Lack of toilets: It is disappointing to note that in this modern age, there is no place of convenience. This is an issue to be worried about. This was one of the major concern raised by the Elders of the community during our visit.
Using proper toilets prevents the transfer of bacteria, viruses and parasites found in human excreta which otherwise contaminate water resource, soil and food. This contamination is a major cause of diarrhea, the second biggest killer of children and leads to other major diseases such as cholera, schistosomiasis and trachoma.
Improving access to sanitation is a critical step towards reducing the impact of these diseases. It also helps create physical environment that enhance safety, dignity and self-esteem. Safety issues are particularly important for women and children who otherwise risk sexual harassment and assault when defecating at night and secluded areas.
Course of action: The course of action will start with identifying the location where the borewell hand pump and toilets will be constructed. The location has been decided by the villagers.Identify the site for digging borewell and construct toilets.
Start the construction work of engaging the laborers for digging the borewell and construct toilets.
Test the water once the water starts flowing.
Start the process of installation of hand pumps, toilet seats and taps.
Build the cover
Build the drainage.
Start utilizing hand pumps and toilets by the community people.
Expected Results/Outcome:
The hand pump would provide clean water for 84 households (546 individual). The number of new cases of water borne diseases will decrease.
Sanitation will be promoted. The salaimenda village community will be provided with public toilets. The community members will be discouraged from the practice of open defecation.
