Shalom!
We would like to introduce ourselves, we are Am McGill.
Over the past year and over the summer, we have begun to realize that there is little space for less-religious albeit practicing Jews in the McGill Jewish community, a gap we feel is waiting to be filled. While we deeply appreciate and value the roles of all the existing organizations, many individuals we spoke to, as well as ourselves, felt that our religious and spiritual needs were not being met.
Am McGill is an inclusive, event-based Jewish group based along themes of community, advocacy, Jewish values and tradition, and giving Jewish students a safe space on McGill’s campus. Our tzevet (the executive board) is comprised of second year McGill students from diverse backgrounds, with diverse interests, but a shared love for our religion, traditions, and people.
We truly believe that Am McGill means a new chapter for the Jewish Community here at McGill University and we are here to invite you in experiencing the incredible journey we are about to embark. We know it will not be easy, but even after only our first week of our Facebook launch, the support has been supremely overwhelming. We know our efforts are needed.
Due to the nature of Am McGill, a new student group, we are lacking in financial support. Initially we had thought we could support ourselves through traditional fundraising, however, due to this positive response from the McGill student body, we have realized that we currently do not have the financial compacity to accommodate for those who have this need. We had underestimated how great this need for a progressive egalitarian student community is, and we do not want to turn anyone away. We hope that you are able to join us in fulfilling that need.
We are so excited about this school year, and we hope to see you at one of our events!
Be’ahava,
The Am McGill Tzevet
