The Jewish Innovation
Music is a huge part of my life. I sang a solo at Carnegie Hall while in high school and I sang in the Singing Hoosiers while at Indiana University, graduating with a minor in music. After working with many amazing Jewish musicians and touring summer camps for four years with Rick Recht, I decided to study in Israel. Inspired by the land of Israel, by in-depth text study at Pardes and by my love of Jewish prayer, I began composing melodies. I would play my music all over Israel, whether rocking out downtown around Ben Yehudah street or leading prayer services in the Old City of Jerusalem. Wherever I am, music is how I connect to prayer. Music heightens my relationship with God and music strengthens my relationship with others when we pray together. I believe that a beautifully recorded album will allow others to heighten their individual relationships with God and help communites unite in prayerful song.
The Impact
I write melodies that are easy to sing and express the meaning of the prayers. Each melody is a midrash, a poetic interpretation of the text, that helps convey the spirit of the prayer. In this way, these melodies make prayer accessible to all and help us connect to old prayers in new ways. As a song leader, I compose melodies that are easy to teach to beginners. As a spiritual educator, I incorporate some lesser known prayers so that these beautiful texts can be learned through music. As an artist, I make music with a fresh sound that will resonate with this generation.
