Ta’im Hummusia:
Delicious food based cultural diplomacy. Hot hummus, fresh pita.
Community space to share ideas, opinions and have voices be heard.
What we are raising money for:
1. Kitchen equipment including stove, oven for our fresh pita, pans and appliances including a refrigerator, mixer, food processor, knives and other kitchen equipment.
2. Serving dishes, tableware, to-go containers, cups, tables, chairs and decor.
3. Initial ingredient supplies including gallons of tahini and lemon juice, and a most substantial quantity of chickpeas, garlic, spices flour and yeast.
4. Library shelfing, books and multimedia equipment to prepare a space where individuals can come together to share and learn about Jewish and Israeli culture, philosophy, art, literature, music and film in order to bridge the gap in available information to American culture about the complexity and breadth of the Jewish/Israeli culture.
5. Trip to Israel to develop and cultivate relationships with Israeli suppliers/producers of spices and tahini. Final menu refinement via hummusia visits in Tel Aviv and other Israeli towns/cities.
The challenges we face:
We will face all of the issues that an upstart restaurant faces, but luckily we have focused in on a core group of products that are highly appealing to a wide population including hummus, pita, shawarma, falafel, pickles and varied salatim.
In addition, there is always the possibility of individuals within the community expressing aggression towards Jews or Israel, G-d willing, it may potentially be in the form of protest and not some expression through violence. We plan to counter negative opinions and even aggression with warm delicious soul food, and open doors for community dialogue, as well as taking the opportunity to use our space as a platform for others to experience a different culture and a different point of view.
I love food and my absolute favorite thing is to make delicious food for other people, I also love Israeli food, its simple and delicious.
I think the sharing of food can be a medium for cross cultural exchange and mutual understanding. If I eat at your table I know you more, if you eat at my table you know that I care about you.
The symbolism of breaking bread as it where, it’s one of the most common expressions to convey idea of making peace. If Ta’im hummusia becomes a reality. I am excited for the opportunity to prepare food for others, and act in stewardship towards greater cultural diversity.
