DO YOU KNOW HOW TO GET TO RASHI STREET?

Everyone studies Rashi’s commentary on the Torah. But do you know the general principles that guided Rashi in writing his commentary?  And do you know how to take your understanding of Rashi to the next level?  Do you know how to:

  • ask the most fertile questions on Rashi?
  • settle contradictions between different Rashi comments?
  • develop clarifications of difficult Rashi comments?
  • use Rashi’s grammatical and etymological comments as windows into his profound understanding of Scripture?
  • explain why Rashi quotes some Midrashim, modifies others, and leaves out so many others?
  • explain why Rashi only occasionally discusses the reasons behind the mitzvot, and why he only occasionally gets involved with halacha?

Please support the publication of “Directions in Rashi,” a new book, in English, that will help you and others become more insightful students of Rashi, at the same time that you enjoy insightful essays on a selected Rashi comment from each of the weekly Torah readings.

SEE SELECTIONS FROM “Directions in Rashi” at www.rashicomments.com.

Contributors of $20.00 and up will receive a copy of the book, with free shipping.

From my first little green Chumash, through years of study at Mesivta Rabbi Chaim Berlin in the 1980's, and in the many years since, I have always been fascinated by Rashi's commentary on the Chumash. What is Rashi saying? Why is he saying it? What are the meanings and implications of what he says? How do Rashi's statements intertwine with the rest of Tanakh, with the Talmud, the Midrash, and other statements by Rashi himself? In 2015, I self-published my own Hebrew supercommentary on Rashi, entitled Hakol Bi'chtav (available at amazon.com). An important part of the sefer is its introduction, in which are listed many of the general principles that guided Rashi in the writing of his commentary. At the request of friends, I began translating and adapting portions of the sefer into English. As I worked at this task, I began to see that although many great scholars have investigated how Rashi wrote his commentary, they have not directly guided us, the students, how to interpret Rashi. I began to turn some of their "Principles of Rashi" into "Principles for the Student of Rashi." Thus was born the English book, "Directions in Rashi." I have a contract from a major Judaica publisher that will ensure wide distribution of the book. However, like the majority of contracts in the Jewish publishing world, this one requires a hefty contribution from the author. The price for publishing this book will be approximately $10,000, a sum that I cannot afford out of pocket. So, I am turning to you, my friends and fellow Rashi students, to help publish this book. "Let the wise man hear and he will add to his wisdom"--this is the goal of "Directions in Rashi," and this is the mitzvah in which you will become a partner by contributing to this campaign.
