For a long time, Cannabis was so internationally persecuted that it was not safe to talk about traditional Jewish use. As if we didn’t have enough trouble, without being associated with Hashashin!

That was not even so long ago. Cannabis Chassidis: The Ancient and Emerging Torah of Drugs was initially published anonymously and privately to avoid the danger of being idenitified with the criminally unacceptable, while testifying the ongoing as well as ancient traditions about Marijuana in a range of Jewish traditions, and most recently and specifically, in the context of Exctatic Chassidut and all initiatory developments on the ongoing and living Torah of all our lives.

We sold out two print runs of that book, in farmers markets and festivals, indybook stores and temples across America, Israel, Great Britain and that’s about it. Still untranslated, even into Hebrew, i’ve been neglecting this project to move on with my life, raise my daughters and care for my communities.

But now, Marijuana’s about to be legal in my native New York, and a new print run is long over due. Condensed and edited down to be more coherent and accessible, with new introductions pending– we’d love to get this out and distributed by this coming April.

But I don’t have cash for that. Print On Demand is valid I guess, but i’ve never liked that model. A print run makes it easier to circulate good gospel and tour with content. If you’d like Cannabis Chassidus to be circulated better, that the innovation and exctatic clarity of the Baal Shem Tov and all the rebbes after him be understood deeply in the context of the good grass that takes the edge off but begs to be related to in holiness, whatsoever that is experienced as– contribute to our efforts today, won’t you?

Around the year 2000, I went to Jerusalem, just out of high school, lookingfor an authentic Jewish tradition for how to smoke marijuana properly, helpfully. What I found additionally and instead was both a livingculture wrestling with the mystery of how to incorporate the ecstatic;and the mystery of it's repression, along with a lot of brilliantguidance and terrible truths about the nature of religion, law, idealism anddrugs. Cannabis Chassidis started as a weblog detailing the question and it'sexploration: How could it be that something as inherent to so manylives as Marijuana, with it's rich history of human usage, has notradition in Torah, a guidance system that claims and/or offers to encompass everything good that dare be known? There ARE traditions; rich allusions to herbs and smokes used in different capacitities, but the more interesting answers and questions wind up being about what there isn't in the tradition, and why vs. when.Along the way, a spectrum of Judaism's living mystical subculture was explored, and the limits of a romantic idealization of both psychedelia and Judaism's redemptive potential touched on and felt deeply, in the context of outstanding communitiesand individuals who have experienced the glory and the failure ofboth. "An enthusiastic and interesting excursion into the psychedelicfringes of hasidic culture." Alan Moore"Here's this emerging genius dude who has a big and growing followingin real life and online - this guy who makes Judaism new and realagain, who digs deep into the Chassidic tradition for its deeplystoned truths. A Jewish Terence McKenna, mining the Torah's hiddenlandscape..." Douglas Rushkoff

Wow, thanks alot. For this much, i'm happy to host you for shabbos in either Brooklyn or Emek HaElah and eat and chill for a whole extended 36 hour window, which includes ritual chill before and after shabbos, before the sun goes down and after a very late havdalah. It will be a party the whole time.
